Carolinas HealthCare System on the Ground and in the Air for Puerto Rico

September 29, 2017
The mission of Carolinas HealthCare System is to improve health, elevate hope and advance healing – for all. This includes not only our direct patients and communities, but also helping our fellow citizens when disasters arise – including those impacted by the damage caused by Hurricane Maria.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency requested assistance and we deployed two CHS aircraft to Puerto Rico and islands impacted by the storm to provide supplies and assist with patient transports. The aircraft crews are providing medical support for as long as they are needed. In addition, Carolinas MED-1, our mobile hospital unit, is on standby and ready to be deployed if called.

The American Red Cross has an immediate need for Comfort Kits, so they can get basic hygiene essentials to people in shelters and temporary housing. Over the past hurricane season, Carolinas HealthCare System teammates have packaged 1,400 meal kits and assembled more than 3,200 comfort kits, including personal messages of hope for the recipients.
